Apple iPhone turns into 5 today

June 29, 2007 was a historic day in history of mankind, when one Apple mobiles changed the fortune of several technology giants and shook the entire smartphone industry for good. Today marks the fifth anniversary of the original Apple's iPhone. When launched at first,it didn't had the best hardware, it doesn't had the software features that other handset vendors claimed users could not do without. Today, five years later , the world is defining what users really want, what smartphones are all about and most importantly, a smartphone need not to be complicated to use. The iPhone on its alone abolished the likes of Nokia, Palm and Research In Motion and also initiated the glorious age of applications. Let’s take a look at its Journey. It was MacWorld Expo 2007, January 9, when Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone. It was nothing like anything anyone had ever seen before. The iPhone had no keypad. It only had a home button under a 3.5-inch glass touchscreen display that was Not made of plastic but glass. It had no stylus and users were expected to use their fingers for display .

The logic behind this was Why have a stylus when god has given us fingers. Rivals were quite eager to dismiss the iPhone. They pointed out that the Apple iPhone lacked 3G connectivity, expandable memory support, Bluetooth support, file transfer, copy-paste, removable battery and so on ... The list was endless. Apple took away smartphones from early adopters, geeks and corporates and made it cool enough for every one to desire. This changed everything and what was the change the world knows today. iOS devices are responsible for more than half of Apple’s revenues. Today with its iPhone like, Apple iPhone 5, Apple iPhone 4S with Apple iPhone 4S price around Rs.40,980 and Apple iPhone 5 price around Rs.45,000 , Apple has sold approximate 250 million iPhones globally in the last five years earning a total of $150 billion from sales of the hardware alone. Revenues from accessories and apps are separate.

On the other hand, Nokia is Suffering and has a market cap below $10 billion making it a potential target for acquisition. Remember, On June 29, 2007, Nokia was the world’s largest smartphone vendor. BlackBerry maker RIM is probably taking its last breath and has seen its market capital below $5 billion. It has failed to respond to the iPhone threat and is no longer the leader either in US or Canada. Almost every player today is imitating now the iPhone – Gorilla glass has become a standard fixture and so has an all-touchscreen form-factor. Every platform is now talking about apps and it is not very uncommon to find phones with non-removable batteries. No one had ever thought that one phone could can change everything. Happy birthday, iPhone and may you live long. I shared that Apple iphone may have smaller docking port.
